Forgiveness: The Pathway to Freedom and Healing!

Another Transparent Truth!

Last month on my Straight Talk Bible Study Series, I facilitated on the topic: Heart Health Matters. We discussed how when we experience something unusual with our hearts, we go to the doctor to give an examination, or check -up. In a spiritual sense, we should regularly do a self-examination to check the posture of our hearts.

During each lesson, each person was asked to complete a self-analysis on the posture of their hearts. To my surprise, my score was somewhat unfavorable. Through a chat with the Holy Spirit, it was revealed that I am holding onto a spirit of unforgiveness. To be honest, I thought I was “Good” when it came to unforgiveness. I thought I had gone to the process of healing, as well as checking off the right boxes.

I wonder how many of us think we are good when we are not? How often do we conduct a self-analysis of our hearts to see where unforgiveness still exists in the hidden places?

What is forgiveness?

Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a decision to release someone from all indebtedness or obligation from damage done to me, whether the damage is emotional, social, physical or financial, etc.

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner is you.” – Lewis Smedes

What walking in Unforgiveness does is keep us as the hostage. Forgiveness is one of the most freeing yet challenging principles in the Bible. If you’ve ever struggled to forgive someone or even yourself-you’re not alone.

However, forgiveness is not optional for believers. God commands it, “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Matthew6:12. Beyond the healing that forgiving someone who wronged us brings to our hearts, it is also commanded in scripture.

Here are a few key pathways on how to embrace forgiveness:

  • Cultivate Compassion: Recognize the shared humanity in others, often understanding that actions come from their own wounds.
    • Release the Offender: Accepting the reality of the harm done and releasing the offender from your own judgment.
    • Pray and Reflect: Seeking inner strength through prayer and meditating on receiving grace.
    • Choose to Let Go: Acknowledging the pain and making a conscious decision to move forward, often treating it as a daily practice.
